KinderArt Safety Tips When Searching for a Private Instructor
Private artists and art educators have a tremendous amount of knowledge and energy to share and one-on-one instruction can be extremely beneficial for children.
When searching for a private instructor for your child(ren), you should keep three important things in mind.
- You should be concerned if: your private instructor refuses to obtain/show a Criminal Background Check.
Many states/provinces require those who work with children, (including private tutors, instructors, coaches, teachers, etc.), to obtain criminal background checks specifically designed to search for child abuse offences. If your private instructor refuses to obtain a criminal background check, you should be concerned.
- You should be concerned if: your private instructor refuses to allow you (the parent/guardian) to stay during the lesson.
It is reasonable if your private instructor asks that you not interfere with his/her instructions, however, if he/she refuses to allow you to stay on the premises, or if he/she insists on only working behind a closed/locked door, you should be concerned.
- You should be concerned if: your private instructor refuses to share references.
Your private instructor should be willing to share the names of past students and their parents/guardians. If they refuse to share references, you should be concerned.
Always be aware and always keep the safety of your children in mind!
