KinderArt® Lesson/Activity

MAGNIFICENT FLOWERS

Grade : K-2
Age: 4-8

Submitted by: Michele Rivera, a teacher at Cincinnati Christian School, Cincinnati Ohio.

Objectives:

Students will explore the elements of art: color, line and form.

What You Need:

  • Old sponges cut or torn
  • 9x12 construction paper, blue, purple
  • Tempera paint blue, magenta, yellow
  • Large yellow construction paper to serve as a canvas.
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Paint smocks

What You Do:

  1. Have Students fold the 9x12 construction paper in half length-wise and cut a vase shape out starting at the fold side. Tall and slim or short and wide. This will form the vase. (set aside)

  2. With a sponge have the student mix a small amount of blue and yellow tempera and using the narrow side of the sponge draw long thin lines on the large yellow paper to form stems for their flowers.

  3. Have the students note how wide the top of their vase is and keep in mind they don't want the flowers to fall out. Also have the student dab on leaves at random and a FEW on the stems. (CHANGE SPONGES NOW)

  4. Dip a clean sponge gently in your blue, magenta and yellow changing sides for colors, then dab on the paper where they want the flowers. The colors will mix and make wonderful combinations.

  5. Glue down the vase add a yellow high light and a line for your table maybe a dab or two for a fallen flower and you have magnificent flowers.

  6. Brighten up your winter or illuminate your spring with this plan.
