This art activity is all about design! Students can learn to appreciate that anything is a surface when it comes to creating art!
What You Need:
- Gallon paint can with lid (new, from hardware store)
- Orange or black spray paint (or acrylic paint)
- Glue, glue gun and sticks, scissors
- Various craft supplies and Halloween supplies ~ for example: ribbons, fabric, glitter, yarns, raffia, buttons, feathers, eyes, spiders, skeletons, etc.
What You Do:
- Paint the can either orange or black. If you spray paint the can, do it outside or in a well ventilated area. For younger students, an adult should perform this step. Younger students can paint the can with acrylic paint instead (less toxic).
- Then, students can decorate the cans using a variety of materials (see photos for inspiration).
The completed art can be used as an autumn sculpture or even a trick and treat container!

Halloween Fun: Great Things to Make and Do
by Abigail Willis Halloween will certainly be fun when children design their own jack-o'-lanterns, make frightening masks, build hanging skeletons, play gruesome games, bake spider (or bat) cakes, and read scary poems aloud.
