Oregon's Journey
by Rascal, Louis Joos (Illustrator)
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Oregon, a circus bear, asks his friend Duke, a circus clown, to take him home to
the forest. Duke, a dwarf, agrees that Oregon needs to be free from captivity to
live in the wild, where he truly belongs. Duke and Oregon set out on their
journey from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and begin their trip to the mountains of
Oregon.
This is a wonderful story of friendship and compassion. The two travelers pass
through the city streets, across meadows, and up into the mountains, where Duke,
finally sheds his clown make up and is free himself. Throughout the story,
characters in the book seem unaware of the bear's presence, as if he wasn't
really there.
The oversized pages of this book are vibrant and colorful and the paintings and
illustrations seems to jump off of the pages. Children will adore the big bear
and tiny man as they trek from one colorful page to another.
While the underlying theme as viewed through an adult's eyes is clearly of a man
trying to find his own freedom, and the bear is just a shadow of that man,
children will thoroughly enjoy the travels that the two friends encounter.
