Do Reindeer Wear Hats?

Do Reindeer Wear Hats?
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

by Andrea Mulder-Slater

This lesson has been such is a hit with our KinderArt Club members, I’ve decided to make it available for everyone!

Reindeer (or, caribou as they are known in North America) are the only animals in the deer (or Cervidae) family where both males and females grow antlers. Pretty cool right?

This painting lesson includes a directed drawing to help children successfully create a reindeer with – or without – a hat and scarf.

Even without a discussion about the most famous reindeer of all, children will enjoy making this friendly creature during the winter months – or any time of year.

What You Need:

  • Thick white paper (Sulphite) 12″ x 18″ (smaller if you are short on time)
  • Liquid Tempera or Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes (various sizes)
  • Water and containers and/or messy mats
  • Black oil pastels or crayons
  • Book list (optional)
  • Worksheet pack (optional)

Messy mats can be used in place of water when using liquid tempera paint. Children wipe their brushes on the mats (poster paper) before dipping into a new color.
