Crayon Resist Fish Inspired by Swimmy

Students will become aware of the illustrating style of Leo Lionni as they create a crayon resist underwater scene after reading the book, Swimmy.

What You Need:

Swimmy by Leo Leonni

What You Do:

  1. Read the story – Swimmy by Leo Lionni.
  2. Go back to the beginning and study the illustrations with the children.
  3. Children draw fish and underwater detail with wax crayons.
  4. Encourage children to illustrate many fish.
  5. Some may imitate the patterns used by the illustrator.
  6. Cover the paper with a blue paint wash.
  7. Display.
