Charley Harper was an incredible artist and illustrator who is best known for his stylized, simplified interpretations of nature and wildlife.

Students will learn about Charley as they recreate one of his iconic bird images – a cardinal surrounded by sunflower seeds (a bird’s favorite treat!)

This is by far one of our most popular lessons. I’ve taught it both online, and in person to kids ranging in age from 4 through 12. Our KinderArt Club members absolutely rave about it!

Kelly Bethel’s art students created AMAZING cardinals by following this lesson!

What You Need:

  • Thick white paper (Sulphite), 9″ x 12″ or watercolor paper (one sheet per student)
  • Pencils/erasers (optional)
  • Black Sharpie markers
  • Markers (or colored pencils or crayons)
  • Optional: watercolor paints and brushes
