Sunset Silhouettes

Sunset Silhouettes
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Kids can make sunset silhouettes using paint and black construction paper.

By Sinead Lawson [Sinead is a teacher from Longtown Creche in Dublin, Ireland.]

What You Need:

  • Large white piece of paper
  • Red, orange and yellow paint
  • Black construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

What You Do:

  1. Collect some sunset pictures and show them to the children a few days before starting the project. It is especially useful if you can obtain some pictures where there are black shadowed objects in the front of the picture and the sunset behind.
  2. Take the white piece of paper and using the three different colored paints, start by painting a strip of red at the top of the page, followed by a strip of orange and finally a strip of yellow at the bottom. This should be left to dry.
  3. Take the black construction paper and draw outlines of any preferred objects. Ideas that my students have tried include boats, houses, people, trees, animals, etc, the list is endless. The older the children the more detailed the drawings can be.
  4. Cut out the drawings and glue them to the bottom of the picture. The result is a classroom full of beautiful sunsets and shadowed images. The children seem to love them.
