This lesson has been such a hit with our KinderArt Club members, I’ve decided to make it available for everyone!

Using a black permanent marker (pencil can be used first) and the color medium of their choice (paint, crayons, colored pencils, etc.), children can create scarecrows with patterned “web” backgrounds in the style of folk artist Alpha Andrews.

What You Need:

  • Sulphite or watercolor or other heavy weight drawing paper (9″ x 12″ per student)
  • Black permanent marker (Sharpie)
  • Pan watercolor paints (or tempera cakes)
  • Paintbrushes, water and water containers.
  • Pencils
  • OPTIONAL: Use crayons or colored pencils instead of paint (especially for younger students).

What You Do:

Using a black permanent marker (pencil can be used first) and the color medium of their choice (paint, crayons, colored pencils, etc.), children can create scarecrows with patterned “web” backgrounds in the style of folk artist Alpha Andrews.
