Make your own paint that smells as good as it looks! Here are three different recipes for you to try.

JELLO® PAINT

Ingredients:

A package of gelatin the same color as the paint (ie red paint – cherry or strawberry gelatin).
  • Tempera paint
  • Paper
  • Paintbrushes and fingers

Directions:

  1. Encourage children to smell the paint as they work with it.
  2. We used this activity while painting a picture of a strawberry.
  3. I mixed strawberry gelatin with red paint.
  4. When the paint dries, the smell remains.
  5. No eating!!

EXTRACT PAINT

Ingredients:

  • peppermint, orange – or other extracts
  • paint
  • paper
  • paint brush

Directions:

Have the children mix a few drops of extract to paint, paint a picture, let dry, then smell the different scents.

DRINK MIX PAINT

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon powdered drink mix (unsweetened is best)
  • 1 Tablespoon warm water
  • Muffin tins or baby food jars
  • Small mixing bowl

Directions:

  1. Mix the water and drink mix in a small mixing bowl.
  2. Paint on paper the way you would with any watercolor paint.
  3. Use different drink mixes for different colors (grape, cherry, lemon, etc.)
  4. Let paint dry overnight before scratching and sniffing.
